Overclocking my Sempron 2400+ on an Abit KV7

Tip for overclockers. Sorry, it has nothing to do with Linux, but since it’s the first time in my life I manage to get an overclock working, and couldn’t find any complete information googling around, I had figure out the correct way of doing it, so I just want to register it for future reference.

I have an Abit KV7 (thanks Helio Castro for the suggestion) with a Sempron 2400+, 512MB DDR PC3200 (400MHz) and a very huge Volcano 12 cooler. The table bellow shows the general idea about what I did and the results I get:

  Before After
Model 2400+ 2800+
FSB 166 200
Divisor 5:2:1 6:2:1
VCore 1.600 1.650
Clock 1683.923 2029.131
Bogomips 3301.37 3981.31

As you can see, I managed to change my Sempron 2400+ into a 2800+. To make it happen, all I had to do was change the FSB, which makes the processor talks faster with the board and use all my RAM power (200*2=400MHz). But since that would also overclock the PCI bus, in a way my AGP/PCI devices wouldn’t work, I had to change the divisor to 6, so I could get 200/6=33MHz. Also, the VCore needs to go up because the more speed you want, the more power you need.

In the end I had a general increase of 20%. More MHz, more bogomips, and less time compiling (one test program reduced from 26min to 20min), with no changes at all in mobo or cpu temperatures, which proves that a good motherboard and great cooling are the secrets of a nice overclocking.

these chips are a bit of an overclocking gem -

my sempron’s doin 1667mhz 2400+ at 2300mhz with 1.775vcore, all day everyday, compiling, doom3 and SETI. thats 40% extra for nothing. It’ll max out unstably at 2500mhz with 1.9v too.

fyi, mobo: KS18DX Pro II,
Geil value ddr400 ram 2.5-3-3-6 & 1:1 divisor 230fsb @ 460mhz 2.8v

Hmmm that’s verry interesting, because my sempron 2400+ is overclocked and does it on 2,0 ghz. I have a asus a7v8x-x motherboard, 2×512 kingston ddr400, 30 GB maxtor, 120 GB maxtor, Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro Advantage, LG dvd burner (16x, DL). My question is to sp1tf1re is how the hell did you reached 2300 mhz :| i can do max 2,1 ghz, but windows will not ne stable then. That’s why it’s now on 2,0 ghz. Please let me know how you’ve reached 2,3 ghz.

I have the abit kv7 motherboard with a sempron 2600+ socket A. Original speed of this sempron was 1.8 ghz. Currently I have been able to take it to 2.3 ghz. Am using the Thermaltake POLO735 cooler. Max cpu temp is 47.5, and I live in a very hot 4th floor apt. hehe. Had to take the vcore to 1.85, I am thinking that is a little much, but the cpu temp is fine. Real happy with this 80 dollar sempron:)

For Dr. Billie, try raising your vcore, keep the ratio at 6-2-1.
