Sao Paulo: o trafego estranho / strange traffic

–pt_BR

Traffic in São Paulo is a strange beast. Some days it’s excellent, while in others it’s chaotic. People used to say it’s a constant chaos, but I do not agree. Let’s give some credit to CET (Traffic Engineering Company) folks that do an excellent job. The problems come with some drivers, that insist in being imprudent and not polite at all, specially the motorcycists and taxi drivers.

But what I whish to say follows. The distance from my home to the office is 15KM. During regular days, when I leave home to get to the office 30min before work hours, I usually take about 1h. Today I decided to get out 1h30m earlier then I usually do, in order to get some pending tasks done. The strange thing is that this time I run the same path in about 15min. It was so nice that I have not found any red lights all the way down, and the only one I found, turned green as soon as I stoped.

I still can’t see anything in this city that makes me crazu. Not even traffic in rainny days. Put some music in your stereo, and enjoy. Forget the crazy drivers outside. :)

Casas Bajia?

–pr_BR

The news is cool and creepy all in one. Cool because it’s nice to know that Novell is using a brazilian case to demonstrate Linux market penetration. Creepy because some crazy guy wrote “Casas Bajia” (with J) instead of Casas Bahia (with H, which is correct). There are still some people that think in Brazil we speak spanish (for the records, it’s brazilian portuguese). To extreme the stereotype, they put a samba as the bacground music (not all brazilians are fond of samba). :)

Anyway, the video can bee sen at Novell’s Marketing Videos site. Look for “Casas Bajia”. Oh, and there are other cool videos too, it’s worth looking at them.

Bad orange juice

I was reading another blog, where this guy commented about some drinks he had during his trip to the USA. So I remember a bad experience I had while I was on a trip to the UK.

This is the WORST orange juice I have ever had!!!

Some fools really don’t know what orange tastes like…

inkblot-0.99.8

New package added to my repo: inkblot.

libinklevel-0.7.0 + ink-0.4.0

As per Herbert Graeber’s request, I have updated my package for libinklevel to 0.7.0. I also added ink, a command line tool to check ink levels.

BTW, kink is not compiling with this new release of libinklevel, so I’m working on a patch, and also trying to package inkblot.

For those who missed, here’s the link for the repository (Fedora + SUSE).

Friendly notice about my packages

If you rely on the packages on my repository for your every day use, please, don’t. I’m currently unavailable to work on them, and it’s possible that they very outdated. OTOH, if you would like me to support some specific package, and you can’t roll it on your own, please, drop me a line and I’ll try to update it ASAIC.

Life’s good (or me @ redhat + sao paulo)

Yeah! Life’s good! Life in São Paulo has been a great experience. Lot’s of new stuff regarding personal/housing issues, and specially professional.

Working for Red Hat has been a great experience in many senses. Even if I don’t do direct work for the Linux community, I am one of the many guys around the world that puts the grease into the Red Hat’s gears. Even though I’m not working as a developer, I’m part of a global team that manages the company internals, and helps everyone in this great company achieve their best production every day. It’s fun, and that’s what I have ever been preparing myself to. Unfortunately the amount of work takes a lot of time, and I have not yet managed to find a comfortable time/place/method to get back to my personal Linux projects.

What can I say about São Paulo? It’s a great city to live, despite it’s huge mass of problems. Well, you have to abstract yourself from a lot of them, and learn dealing with others. I’m happy that I managed to learn to deal with the constant traffic jams, that are the most common aspect of the city. Learning the correct times and places you would usually find these jams helps a lot to optimize your day. One thing that still needs some tweak is the life cost. Dam, living here is expensive.

Some people still insist to say I’m crazy because I left Maceió and it’s tremendously beautiful beaches. But I insist: I was born in a urban city (Belém), which is much more similar to São Paulo then it was to Maceió, so I’m feeling very comfortable and very much at home.

Well, enough for now. More updates soon. :)
