Today I’ve been presented to a very cool site: Wikimapia. One of the most interesting things that caught my attention is that you can people can mark spots, put names and descriptions on them. The main thing that amazed me, is that someone already marked the building I live in, and the one where my office is in. I could even find a lot of addresses that Google Maps/Earth can’t. I’ll browse around a little more. ![]()

Trick for a cheap bluetooth dongle
July 17th, 2007 — hardware
Last week I bought a cheap bluetooth dongle for my home desktop. My wife just wants to copy MP3 to her cellphone, and download pictures from the phone to the computer, so I didn’t see the need to spend too much. So I got this weird dongle that simply identifies itself as ES-388 on the box. When I got home, connected, and:
hcid[2280]: Can’t read name for hci0: Input/output error (5)
hcid[2280]: Can’t read class of device on hci0: Input/output error(5)
Dam… After googling around looking for the product name (found nothing) and the USB ID (0a5c:2100 Broadcom Corp.), I finally discovered that this little guy is, in fact, a Broadcom 2045 (why hide?). After some more google love, I finally stumbled with the final tip that fixed my problems:
options hci_usb reset=1
Add the above line to /etc/modprobe.conf and be happy. Now I can transfer files back and forth, easily (well, not that much), even though veeeeery slow.
Oh, before you ask, the phone is a Sony Z550i.
Web hosting moved
July 15th, 2007 — anything
I moved my site from my old web hosting server to DreamHost. Why? a) It’s the ultimate nerds choice. b) I needed some more resources that the other could not provide. The address and site resources remain the same for a while, new things still to come. Looks like everything is ok now.
Possible blog outage

This blog may be off-line during the weekend (14+15/Jul). I’m gonna try to move hosting providers.
Blog visual and functionality update
July 8th, 2007 — anything
I didn’t like the last theme I was trying, so I just stick back to my standard one. Since I was messing with visual, I added some more functionality.
- Updated both WordPress and ShadedGrey theme.
- Fixed WP-Postviews, which was not counting any view at all.
- Added ShareThis, with which you can share/bookmark the posts with your friends (by e-mail or a bunch of social 2.0 web sites).
- Added WP-dTree to show up the yearly post archives in a neat tree-style list.
I hope you like it.
Eye glasses dependency
July 7th, 2007 — anything
I went through a very inconvenient moment this morning. My cat just threw my eyeglasses on the floor, and one of the lenses broke badly. Considering I’m almost blind without them (can’t drive, can’t work, can’t watch TV, etc), I had to run to any available ophtalmologist, get a new prescription and buy the cheapest glasses I could find, that kind that are ready in 1 hour only. Fortunately I lost only one of the lens, so I could manage to keep my own frame and get back on business on very short time.
The whole situation was really inconvenient. Thank god it’s saturday, and I had my wife at home to drive for me. So now I’ve diceded I’m going for surgery and try to get rid of this ridiculous dependency.
All the screen space I need
July 6th, 2007 — fun, hardware

Yesterday I received my brand new Samsung 226BW. It’s a 22″ widescreen monitor, that can do 1600×1050 (unfortunately @60Hz, but that’s all the monitor can do) with 2ms response time. I had no problems making it work at full resolution on my Fedora 7 with a NVIDIA GeForce 6600. The image quality is awesome, specially because I could connect it using a DVI port. I’m going to have some fun during the weekend.
Oh, by the way, the picture above shows the monitor and my living room TV, which is a 32″ widescreen LG 32LC3R, another one of my recent acquisitions. They’re together in the picture with that Matrix box just to show you the appropriate proportions. ![]()
