November 8th, 2007 — games, hardware
I was reviewing my posts, and found one I had to do a follow up. Once I said that I would go with PS3 if I could afford it. Well, I can, but when it came the time to buy, it was not worth it.
There is a big price difference between the PS3 with no accessories, and the XBox 360 with extras (controller, DVI, 1 game, remote control, etc). In the end, the XBox offered a better price/benefit rate, and I decided to go with it.
Also, the price of the games in Brazil is also huge, and it’s easier to find good titles for the XBox than the PS3. The amount of PS3 games selling in Brazil is lower than XBox, and even if I would go with legacy PS2 games, what good would be to have PS3 and run legacy? In any case, XBox also runs legacy games from the original XBox console.
So, now I have an XBox 360, with a few accessories and some nice games. The graphics look fantastic on my 32″ LCD TV, connected using the HDMI cable (1080i) Well, let’s be honest, that’s all Windows is good for: games.

After a lot of Chuck Norris jokes showing how he’s “the greatest”, now someone made one page showing how Linus Torvalds would totally own Chuck. Read, and have fun.

Today I just finished playing Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. Very good game. I like the game mode much better than Call of Duty. Not that CoD is lame (it’s still awesome), but they’re very different. CoD is more like “knife in the mouth, let’s go to war”, also called as “Rambo method”. On the other hand, GRAW is more like “think before you go”. There is tactics, team work, methods, hiding, sniping, just like modern wars are supposed to be. Next on list: GRAW 2.

I don’t have a proper answer for my own question: ‘why americans don’t like soccer?’. Well, one thing I can tell you for sure: narration of soccer games on American TV is BORING, I noticed that pretty right when I was in the US. Yesterday I received a copy of FIFA 08 for my XBox 360, direct from USA. In the past I used to play the FIFA series on the PC, with Brazilian narration, and the feeling of the game is waaaaay better. You can feel the emotion and the passion through the announcer on the Brazilian version, while on the American copy it’s booooring. I guess that’s the reason why they don’t like it.
October 29th, 2007 — fun, movies
I’ve gotta say that when I saw “Jim Carey” on the movie credits, I got a little skeptical about the results, but curiosity is stronger, and the movie must be seen. It was a nice surprise when I finished watching Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. A very nice and intelligent movie, with a very complex story line. Kate Winslet plays a very strong and spontaneous character, which creates curious situations, and develops very nicely during the film. Quality time that made me thing that we need to keep every single memory we have, even the bad ones. Experiences make us what we are, and they would be useless if we don’t keep any memories.

I forgot to write about this fun story.
Last week, when I was connecting flights in Atlanta to come back to Sao Paulo, there was a guy, American by the looks, that was checking in to get the same flight. The girl in the Delta desk look at his passport and shoot the fatal question: “do you have a visa, sir?” The guy look astonished, and replied “do I need a visa?” “Yes sir, all Americans are required to have a visa to travel to Brazil.”
Reaction: “what? I need a visa? why nobody told me that before? why do I get to know it right before boarding?“. The girl returned his passport and said “sorry sir, it’s not our job to advise about visa issues“. He took his cell phone, dialed and started yelling: “dam, why didn’t you tell me I need a visa?“.
Awesome!
BTW, more information here.

I’m watching Brazil x Australia, women’s soccer, on ESPN here in the US. The narration is lame, you can clearly see that he knows very little about soccer, and needs an ex-player (woman) to help him out.
But the worst part is the goal narration. In Brazil when someone scores the narrator demonstrates a part of the feeling of being there, and yells a very strong and long “goooooooooal” when playing a party jingle. Here, nothing, just silence. “There she comes, she kicks, and scores”, then he shuts up and you hear people screaming like crazy on the stadium, but he keeps shut while the players celebrate. No emotion at all.
I wonder why Americans don’t like soccer… Lame transmission, lame narration… Someone, please, hire a Brazilian for the narration.

Last Friday I’ve been to The Flying Saucer. It’s a very interesting bar in Raleigh, with more than 200 different brands of beer. They also have the “U.F.O Club“. Every time you try a new beer, they’ll mark it down in their system. You can check on your status at the kiosk in the store, or online. Once you drink all of the beers they’ve got on tap, they’ll put your name on a golden plate and stick it on the wall (”The Ring of Honor“).

Se alguém sabe onde vende Mountain Dew no Brasil, me avise. Acho que tomei mais isso (e Guinness) do que água na última semana.
If someone know where I can get Mountain Dew in Brasil, let me know. I think I drink it (and Guinness) more than water during this week.
