Ontem à noite não tinha nada melhor pra fazer, instalei o Fedora 10 lá em casa.

Não vou fazer nenhum review aqui. Tem muito site que faz isso, e faz com maestria.

Só queria comentar que há alguns releases atrás, quando inventaram o tal do Codeine, que servia para os codecs necessários para rodar um arquivo de mídia, a idéia era boa, mas a execução era porca. O Totem (ou Rythmbox) abria uma janela dizendo o que estava disponível gratuito, e o que seria pago. A instalação era terrível, e nem sempre funcionava.

Já no Fedora 10 isso foi integrado ao PackageKit, e essa integração ficou fenomenal. Ontem fiz uns testes com vídeos em DivX, e de primeira ele detectou os codecs faltando, e tentou baixar os pacotes. Obviamente não havia nada, já que por padrão o Fedora não libera pacotes com codecs não-livres (ref). Ok, pode não ser muito óbvio para quem não está acostumado, mas é assim que funciona no Fedora.

E como contornar? Para isso existe o RPM Fusion, um repositório de pacotes que não podem ser distribuídos pelo Fedora por uma ou outra restriçao. Adicionando esse repositório ao seu sistema, o PackageKit encontra facilmente os plugins to Gstreamer (Totem/Rythmbox) que permitem o uso de vários tipos de vídeos proprietários ou não-livres.

Muito bom! Estamos caminhando para a integração total entre o desktop e o “fornecedor de software”, já que uma das reclamações mais constantes que ouço é que é muito difícil instalar um programa no Linux, muito mais ainda saber de onde instalar.

Nesse feriado fiquei em uma situação quase desesperadora. Meu Xbox 360 pifou com as famosas “três luzes vermelhas“. Quase entrei em pânico, pois isso aconteceu na quinta-feira, feriado aqui em SP, quando não tinha como resolver. Pra piorar, entrei em contato com a Microsoft Brasil, e apesar de eles darem garantia de 3 anos sobre esse problema, a garantia só cobre aparelhos comprados no Brasil (não, o meu não é contrabando, mas eu comprei nos EUA, e entrei legalmente no Brasil).

Mercado Livre ao resgate! Pesquisei bastante, e achei um carinha que dizia resolver o problema, e melhor ainda, por um preço justo. Fechei negócio, e levei lá no dia seguinte. O cara abriu o console na minha frente, mostrou onde era o problema, e resolveu na hora. Tudo ficou pronto em 2h!

Salvei meu feriado. Não joguei muito, mas pelo menos não passei o fim de semana preocupado em perder meu console que me custou tão caro. Viva!

Last week I found myself in an almost desperate situation. My Xbox 360 busted with the famous “three red lights“. I almost panic, because it happened Thursday, when it was a holiday in Sao Paulo, when there was no possible way to find someone to fix. Worse, I called Microsoft Brasil, and even though they have an extended 3 year warranty for this problem, the warranty covers consoles purchased in Brazil only (I bought mine in USA).

Mercado Livre to the rescue! (Note: it’s an e-Bay-like site in Brazil) Searched a lot, and found someone who calimed to fix the problem, and best of all, for a fair price. Done deal, took my console there in the next morning. The guy opened it while I was watching, showed me the problem, and fixed right away. Everything was good in 2 hours!

Saved my holiday. I didn’t play much, but at least I did not spend the rest of the weekend worried about losing my console, which cost so much. Hurray!

Today the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) from CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) starts it’s operation. This is a huge particle accelerator (also widely known as “the largest machine built by man”) which will try to reproduce the conditions that existed only during the Big Bang, and also try to detect and prove the existence of many particles only known in theory (so far).

Some say this is the prelude to the end of the world, but that’s just human nature. Usually people are scared about things they don’t know or don’t understand. For those people, today is the first day towards the end.

For those who believe the LHC is a benefit to humanity, we can only hope that with the experiments we can finally understand black holes, worm holes, big bang, or even time travel and parallel dimensions.

Playing a little more with VirtualBox (*). Now I have 2 guest OSes being installed at the same time, while I’m still browsing (and blogging), reading e-mail, chatting on IRC and listening to my music. All that with 75%~80% CPU usage. All that on an AMD 3000+ (Fedora 8 with 64bits kernel).

After the Y2K bug, here come the Y2K38 and Y10K bugs.

What a great surprise to discover such nice virtualization application. VirtualBox works so nice, so fast and so smooth, and has such a very easy and well designed interface. Very cool.
